Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud  ( Somali; Xasan Sheekh Maxamud; born 29 November 1955) is a Somali politician who has served as the president of Somalia since May 2022. He is the fonder and current chairman of the Union for Peace and Development Party. He was indirectly elected as President of the Federal Republic of Somalia on 15 May 2022, defeating the incumbent of Somalia from Mohamed Abdullah Farmajo. He previously served as the 8th president of Somalia from 2012 to 2017. A civil and political rights activist, Hassan was previously a University professor and dean at SIMAD University which he co-founded.

                                                                

Ealy Life and Education

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was born on November 29,1955, in Jalalaqsi, Hiran, a central region in Somalia. He hails from the Abgaal sub-clan of the Hawiye, one of Somalia's major clan, Hassan completed his his early education in Somalia. He later moved to India, where he earned a bachelor's degree in technology from the Indian Institute of technology (IIT) in 1981. Subsequently, he obtained a master's degree in technical education from Bhopal University in 1988.

Early career

After completing his education, Hassan Shaikh Mohamud returned to Somalia and began his career in the education sector. He worked as a University lecturer and consultant in various educational institutions. He became deeply involved in civil society and non-government organizations (NGOs), particularly those focused on education and development. In 1999, he co-founded the Somali Institute of Management Administration Development (SIMAD) in Mogadishu, which later evolved into SIMAD University. This institution became a significant center for higher education in Somalia.

Political Career

• Formation of the Peace and Development Party

In 2011, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud founded the Peace and Development Party (PDP). His entry into politics was driven by a desire to bring stability and development to Somalia, which had been ravaged by decades of civil war and political turmoil.

• Presidency (2012 - 2017)

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was elected as the President of Somalia on September 10, 2012. His election marked the end of the transitional period and the beginning for the Federal Government of Somalia. He was the first president to be elected by the newly formed Federal Parliament of Somalia.
