History

Manchester City Football Club, commonly referred to as Manchester City or simply City, is a professional football club based in Manchester, England. Originally founded as St. Mark's (West Gorton) in 1880, the club became Ardwick Association football Club in 1887 and then Manchester City in 1894. The club's history is marked by its period of both success and Struggle, with notable ups and downs throughout its existence.

City first tasted major success in the early 20th century, winning the FA Cup in 1904, However financial troubles and fluctuating performances meant that they spent much of the mid-20th century moving between the first and second Divisions of English football. A resurgence occurred in the 1960s and 1970s, under the Management of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison, when they won the league title, FA Cup, League cup, and European Cup Winners Cup.

The club's fortunes waned again in the 1980s and 1990s, resulting in relegations to the third tier of English football. The 2000s, however, marked the beginning of a significant turnaround, especially following the takeover by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed  Al Nahyan of the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008. This led to substantial investment in players, infrastructure, and management, helping the club become one of the powerhouse of English and European football.

Recent Success

Under the Management of Pep Guardiola, who joined in 2016, Manchester City has enjoyed unprecedented success. Guardiola's philosophy of possession-based football and tactical innovation transformed the team into one of the most formidable sides in Europe.  City won the Premier League in 2018 with a record-breaking 100 point ("Centurions"), becoming the first team in the Premier League era to reach that milestone. They also became the first English men's team to win a domestic treble (Premier League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup) in the 2018-2019 season.

Manchester City continued their dominance by winning the Premier League in 2021 and 2022, along with multiple EFL Cup and an FA Cup. The pinnacle of their recent success came in the 2022-2023 season when they achieved a historic treble by winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA champions League , becoming only the second English club to achieve this feat after Manchester United in 1999.
